J01454 (IJN) LIEUTENANT COMMANDER’S WINTER SERVICE TUNIC. A fully-lined, three-quarter length, dark navy blue wool tunic, whose single-breasted fly front is closed by nine hooks and eyes, which lead to a stand-up collar with a dual hook and eye closure at the throat. A horizontal slash pocket is to each hip. Vents rise 7" from behind these pockets to either reverse seam. The base of the tunic, the outline of its vents, each side of its front closure, and the upper edges of its collar have decorative black banding to them. The stitched outlines of more banding may be seen where they were removed from either cuff. It would appear that the removed banding would have indicated a junior officer rank. To either side of the collar are sewn the 1 3/4" x 15/16" black wool bases to double bars of golden, horizontal tress, each of which have silver alloy cherry blossoms pinned between the bars to their forward edges. These indicated the rank of Lieutenant Commander. The interior of the tunic is lined in black, brushed cotton, but for the sleeves, which are in a similar material but in white with striped patterns. A horizontal slash pocket is to each interior breast. Above and to the right of the left interior pocket is a smaller, diagonal pocket, most likely for a watch. Between these horizontal and diagonal pockets is sewn a 1 5/8" x 2", white oilcloth patch. To the left of the patch is printed a vertical column of ten kanji characters, with two characters printed horizontally to the right of it, underneath of which are ink stamped three characters followed by three western numerals, and a western numeral and two more characters are handwritten beneath that. To the back of the interior collar is sewn a horizontal silk tag, upon which is woven, in gold on black, anchors to either side of four kanji characters. Both the interior and exterior are only lightly age and usage soiled, although the collar tabs have nap wear to them, and one has a noticeable moth nip. Approximately a size 38.
