J013658 (IJA) TYPE 90 COMBAT HELMET WITH COVER & CAMOUFLAGE NET. A standard WWII Japanese infantry combat helmet, with a cover, over which is camouflage netting. The shell, constructed from chrome molybend steel, retains most of its olive drab paint to the visible interior, with light surface spotting to its crown and along its rim. Lightly stamped along its rear interior apron is an obscured maker’s logo, with the kanji character for size "large" more prominently stamped beneath it. What appears to be this same character has been hand painted, in white, over the maker’s logo. Along the forward apron is hand painted, in light blue, three other kanji characters, most likely the original owner’s name. Its three-pad pigskin liner and band is complete, with noticeable soiling and chafing, but no cracking or tearing. The liner pads each have their original cloth padding bags and tie tapes attached to their undersides, two of which retain their padding. The un-padded bag under the forward liner pad has kanji characters within a horizontal rectangle ink stamped to it, most likely the manufacturer’s mark. Indiscernible kanji characters may also be seen ink stamped to the rear right liner pad. The helmet is complete with its original cloth chinstrap, which shows light to moderate soiling and wear, liner tie-string, and all rivets and rings, which are moderately to heavily surface spotted. Over the entirety of the helmet’s exterior is fitted the standard pattern padded cover, issued to Japanese Army troops until 1943, when the second pattern cover, with its reinforced rim band, was produced. Its khaki-colored, water-resistant cloth exterior is comprised of six machine sewn pieces, meeting at the apex of the crown and gathered along their tunnel-looped base by an adjustable tie string. A yellow wool, five-pointed IJA star is machine sewn to the front of the cover. To what can be seen of its interior, its off-white liner mirrors the six-piece construction to the exterior, and it is well marked with manufacturer’s and depot stamps. Light age and usage soiling is evident throughout, and there are white discolorations to its apex. The helmet cover is itself covered with faded, olive drab netting, comprised of seven double strands extending from its central fabric "ring," with each of these strands then forming several interconnected diamond shapes before being fixed under the edge of the all-around visor with an adjusting drawstring. The netting appears to be completely intact, with some fraying to a couple of its strands, but no tears. Overall, a very impressive, and complete, example, all of whose elements are in very good condition.
