J013458 (IJA) OFFICER'S LEATHER DISPATCH/MAP CASE. A typical, medium brown leather army issue dispatch case, used for maps, compass, pencils and plotting instruments. The case is 11" in height, 8" wide, and can expand to approximately 4" thick if full. A fold-over flap is to both its forward and reverse faces. The forward fold-over flap has the outline of a five-pointed star stitched to its base, beneath which is sewn a leather tab with a stud hole near its end. This tab would pass through the horizontal leather loop sewn to the body of the case, with its stud hole then mating with the brass stud beneath it. A sewn repair may be seen to the tab. The reverse fold-over flap has brown painted metal snap buttons along either side of its base, which mate with corresponding alloy studs to the case body. The underside of these snaps, and the studs, exhibit heavy verdigris. Three small vertical pockets for pens or pencils, with a horizontal loop above them, are to either of the case’s expandable sides. A thick leather divider separates the front from the back pouches, to either side of the top of which are sewn inwardly-angled leather tabs with moderately surface spotted metal "D" rings to their ends. Wrapped around each of these rings are leather straps, with moderately surface spotted, single-pronged metal buckles to one end, buckling holes to the other, and two retaining loops along their lengths. Each other end of these straps wrap around the rectangular base of a 2" tall, nickel-silver plated alloy belt hook. Penciled initials, no doubt the "liberator’s," are to the interior wall of the forward compartment - the case is otherwise unmarked. Moderate age darkening, surface scratching, and chafe wear is evident throughout, and the leather to the base of the rear compartment has a couple of tears to it.
