J012658 (IJN) PETTY OFFICER'S BLACK WINTER SIDE CAP. A black wool cap as used by a Petty Officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Sewn over the forward seam line of the body of the cap is a golden yellow anchor machine woven against the black base of an approximately 1 3/8" tall, vertical oval patch. The base of this patch has worn away, where frayed threads from the anchor may be seen. A 3/8" wide, horizontal white band is sewn 3/8" above the edge of the cap its entire circumference, signifying the rank of Petty Officer. The doubled chin strap, whose ends are sewn over each ear, is in the same color and material as the rest of the cap, and is complete with its two adjustment loops. Its short, unstiffened visor is also made of the same material as the body and has six parallel rows of reinforced stitching to it. Two reinforced ventilation holes to either side of its body, near the crown. A 1" opening rises from the base of the reverse seam line, to either side of which are small perforations, through which an adjusting cord is fed. The unlined, and otherwise featureless, interior has a 1" wide, white canvas sweatband sewn to it. What appear to be faint, handwritten kanji characters may be seen to the sweatband over the left ear. Light to moderate age and usage soiling is evident throughout. Came back with US vet. One of the harder examples to find.
