J012558 (IJA) SOLDIER’S "PERSONAL" FLAG WITH KANJI. Most Japanese troops during the second world war carried a personal flag. They had practical as well as patriotic uses, such as marking positions to keep them safe from friendly aircraft while advancing. This particular example, in thickly woven white silk, is 36" x 26 1/2", and has small, triangular reinforcements, also in white silk, sewn to its hoist edge corners, each with an alloy grommet to them, from which extend short, woven tie-strings. An approximately 15" diameter red "Himaru" is printed to the center of the flag’s white field. Handwritten, in black, around the Himaru are numerous kanji characters which one must assume to be patriotic slogans, prayers and charms from friends. Moderate age yellowing and soiling is evident, its hoist edge corners are torn, and the flag has both large and small holes throughout. It remains, however, an attractive example of what was a typical USMC war trophy.
