J009558 CASED NEXT-OF-KIN MEDAL. A medal in the form of a silver or silver washed alloy cherry blossom, set against a 15/16" diameter, serrated-edged background, and suspended from a purple cord. To the reverse of the medal is embossed a column of kanji characters. The patina of old silver may be seen to both of its faces. Its cord is formed into a bow whose upper loop is slightly longer than those to either side, to the center of which is a ring, connected to another ring which slides through the perforation to the top of the medal. Through a ring fed unto the uppermost loop of the bow is a triangular pin-back device. The two free ends of the cord, which descend approximately 2 1/2" from the medal’s suspension ring, terminate in tassels. The pin-back device is slid unto a brass hook protruding from the upper part of the yellow flocked interior of the medal’s case. The flocking is lightly worn but relatively unsoiled. The 2 9/16" x 4 3/4" x 7/8" softwood case, which separates along its sides, has a column of gold kanji characters stamped to its cover, which are repetitions of those seen to the reverse of the medal. The case exhibits light surface scratching and even lighter age soiling.
