J009457 (IJA) SOLDIER'S PERSONAL NATIONAL FLAG WITH KANJI.
BACKGROUND:
Most Japanese troops during the second world war carried a personal flag. They had practical as well as patriotic uses, such as marking positions to keep them safe from friendly aircraft while advancing.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Two piece cotton example is 28" x 27", with woven tie-strings to two corners. An approximately 12" diameter red "Himaru" is sewn to the center of the flag’s white field. Handwritten, in black, around the Himaru are numerous kanji characters with various slogans "I pray for your good luck on the battlefield", "Presented to Veda Masuo-Kun", with numerous other signatures. The flag exhibits moderate age soiling throughout. Very nice, unplayed with salty example.
