J008157 CASED 1942 HOME DEFENCE POLICE COMMEMORATIVE BADGE. A 1 3/16" wide and 1 9/16" tall, oval-shaped badge, of silver-colored alloy, in its original, wooden presentation case. The slightly convex badge features, against its pebbled background, a gold-finished Police emblem, beneath which are two columns of kanji characters, all enclosed by an open-toped wreath of cherry blossoms and leaves, with a bow to their base, and surmounted by a spread-winged peacock. Light age darkening is evident to its recesses, but that only serves to highlight its details. To the reverse is, to the top, a hinged, dual pin and, to the bottom, a catch assembly, between which are embossed two columns of stylized kanji characters, the right column being a "Showa era 17th Year, 10th Month" (October, 1942) date. The badge’s light weight and light colored box is 1 13/16" wide, 2 1/4" tall, and 5/8" deep, and separates along its sides. To its cover is impressed, in gold, two columns of kanji characters. The six characters to the right column are a repetition of those seen divided into two columns to the obverse of the badge. The three characters to the left column are a repetition of those to the left column to the reverse of the badge. Included within the box is a paper envelope, 1 3/8" wide and 1 5/8" tall in its folded position. To its obverse is the blue background to white peacocks flanking a column of three characters. To the reverse, its two extended sides fold into and are covered by a perforated flap descending from the top, and a flap with a corresponding tab rising from the bottom. Printed, in blue, to the bottom flap are five columns above four rows of characters, some utilizing the "Iroha" syllabary. The paper is very lightly age yellowed and soiled, but is remarkably intact. The consigner reports that this is a Home Defence Police badge, commemorating an Imperial visit to the Saga prefecture in Kyushu on the aforementioned date.
