J007758 (IJA) CASED 2ND LIEUTENANT'S "TYPE 5" SERVICE UNIFORM SHOULDER INSIGNIA. The "Type 5" (5th year of the Showa era, or, 1930) rank insignia were worn on the shoulders of the uniform, as that model’s stand-up collar featured the arm of service colors and regimental numerals. Each of these are of padded, red wool, 3 9/16" long and 1 1/8" wide, edged with 1/8" wide gilt wire embroidery, between which runs a 3/16" wide, gold-colored stripe, with a gilt-washed brass, five-pointed star affixed to its center. This configuration distinguished the wearer as being a Second Lieutenant. Each of their reverses are backed in pigskin or imitation leather and have, hinged at one end, 3 1/8" x 9/16" nickel-silver plated alloy tabs. The cut-outs to the free ends of these tabs mate with smaller tabs positioned to the underside of the other end of the insignia. Light age soiling is evident throughout, their wool bases are typically nap worn, and their gilt elements have dulled and darkened somewhat with age. They are wrapped in tissue paper within the interior of their original storage case. The 2 5/8" x 5" x 1 1/8", cardboard case has a removable lid, upon which is a column of four kanji characters. Very light edge wear may be seen along the bottom of the case, but it is otherwise in excellent condition. This type of insignia was discontinued with the introduction of the "Type 98" uniform, in 1938, which lacked the cloth loops sewn to the shoulders that these would have been attached to, instead having a lay-down collar unto which new pattern rank tabs were applied.
