J007658 (IJN) ENSIGN'S SHOULDER BOARDS. A pair of shoulder boards, each of which are 5 3/16" long and 2 1/8" wide. Upon their stiffened, black wool bases are sewn 5/16" wide stripes of golden tress, with a decorative button to one end, and a rank "pip" near the other. The "pip" is in the form of a golden-colored alloy, five-petaled cherry blossom, and it, in combination with the tress, denoted the rank of Ensign. The narrowness of the tress further distinguished the Ensign’s branch of service as being Engineering. The convex brass button has embossed to it a fouled anchor, against which is superimposed a cherry blossom, all against a horizontally ribbed background bordered by a rope-like surround. The reverses of the shoulder boards are faced in pigskin or imitation leather, near one end of which exits a 4 1/16" x 3/4" leather strap, which is fixed at its other end by a 2 11/16" x 1/4" nickel-silver plated metal tab protruding through it from the underside of the button. Light surface spotting may be seen to the metal tabs, and the leather is moderately age and usage soiled, with one having a noticeable crack around the base of its strap, which appears to have a glue repair. To the obverse, verdigris may be seen to their buttons and cherry blossoms, each of the latter having an overall dull brown patina to them, with only hints of what may have been a gilt wash visible to their recesses. The tress has dulled with age. Typical nap wear and light edge wear is evident to both of their wool bases.
