J007059 (IJA) COMFORT BAG. A 9 3/4" x 12 3/4" olive drab-colored cotton bag with a tunnel loop and drawstring along its top edge. Known as "Hokobukuro" to the Japanese soldier, they were "ditty bags" designed to hold his personal belongings. Printed, in black, to one side is a zig-zag pattern, underneath of which are three large kanji characters, vertically arranged. To the left of the characters is a vertical rectangle with two characters to its top division, which translate as "surname." To the other side is a box with seven vertical columns of kanji characters whose, from right to left, second, third, fifth and sixth columns are headed by the characters for the numbers one, two, three, and four respectively. The bag is age toned and exhibits minor color fading along its edges, shows typical period use. An illustration of an identical bag may be seen on page 266 of Mike Hewitt’s "Uniforms And Equipment Of The Imperial Japanese Army In World War II". There is also a small paper tag with kanji attached.
