J00655 (IJA) EM/NCO'S BELT, FRONT AMMO POUCHES & BAYONET FROG. The standard, Model 30 (1897) equipment belt, front ammunition pouches, and bayonet frog as used by the Japanese forces until the end of the war. The 1 3/4" x 41 1/2" brown leather belt has one end folded and sewn around a single claw brass buckle, and the other end has twelve corresponding buckling holes to it. Its brass buckle has dulled and has noticeable verdigris to it, and its leather exhibits typical chafe wear but it is otherwise intact and still supple. Unmarked. Continuing the grouping is a pair of front ammunition pouches, both being 5 7/8" wide, 3 1/2" tall, and 2 1/2" deep at their tops, tapering to 1 3/8" at their bottoms, and each are entirely constructed of thick, brown leather. Their stitched hinge top flaps open outward and are both secured by a floating, horizontal closure strap, with a stud hole to each end, passing through stitched-on loops to their flap tops, and attaching to brass studs on either side of their bodies. Two vertical belt loops are stitched onto each of their reverses. Both of their interiors are separated into two compartments by thick leather dividers. Each of them would have held two groups of three five-round clips of 7.7mm ammunition, for a total of sixty rounds between the two. Moderate age and usage soiling, chafe wear, and age darkening may be seen to both, however, all of their original stitching appears to be intact, and their leather is still supple. Lastly is the brown leather bayonet frog, approximately 2 1/2" wide and 7 3/4" in overall height, which features, to its upper section, dual belt loops formed from folding over and stitching the leather body. A small oval opening is beneath the loops and behind the front pocket, which is rivetted to the body on either side of its top and stitched down its side seams. A vertical retaining strap with two buckling holes is sewn to the pocket’s front, which would loop through a bayonet scabbard’s strap band, and then mate with the single pronged brass buckle sewn to the base of the strap itself. Some verdigris is evident where the buckle and brass rivets contact the leather, and the leather itself exhibits typical chafe and usage wear, but is, like the other items, still supple.
