J006457 FOUR RETIRED SOLDIER'S BADGES. Four, roughly shield-shaped, veterans’ association badges, each featuring, to their obverses, a fouled anchor and crossed swords on a pebbled background, over which is affixed a brass, five-pointed star. The first, and thickest, of these is 11/16" wide and 1 1/16" tall, of silver washed alloy, whose pebbled background has darkened with age. To its reverse is a hinged, vertical pin, with a locking catch assembly near the base. To either side of this is embossed a column of kanji characters, and, within a circular depression to the center, is the character "Hon," whose meanings include "true" and "real." Light age soiling is evident throughout, although its brass star is still relatively bright. The next badge is the same width as the former, but is half as thick and 1 1/8" tall, and it appears to have had a gold wash. A vertical pin and catch assembly is to its otherwise featureless reverse. Its brass star has dulled and is loosely seated, and the wash to the reminder is worn and darkened. The final two badges are larger than what is usually found, both being 1 1/16" wide and 1 11/16" tall. Although both have brass stars, the remainder of one is silver washed, whereas the other is washed in gold. The reverse of the gold washed example is missing its vertical pin, although the base for it, and its catch, remain. An indiscernible kanji character, or characters, may be seen impressed near the top of the reverse, and the "Iroha" syllabary character for "I" is clearly impressed to its center. The gold wash has darkened somewhat with age, but has been mostly retained to both of its faces. Light verdigris may be seen around its brass star. The reverse of the silver washed example has a crimped to its top a dual pronged arrangement, with dual catches near its base. Its obverse is noticeably, moderately soiled but appears to have retained most of its wash. These were given, in many minor variations, to veterans of the wars in China, Korea, and Manchuria, as well as to those who fought against the allied nations.
