J006257 (IJN) COMMANDER'S SHOULDER BOARD. An approximately 4 7/8" x 1 5/8" shoulder board, upon whose obverse, stiffened, black wool base are sewn two, 5/8" wide stripes of golden tress, with a decorative button to one end, and two rank "pips" near the other. The "pips" are each in the form of a silver-washed alloy, five-petaled cherry blossom, and they, in combination with the stripes, denoted the rank of a Commander. The convex brass button has embossed to it a fouled anchor, against which is superimposed a cherry blossom, with an Imperial Chrysanthemum over that, all against a horizontally ribbed background bordered by a rope-like surround. The reverse of the shoulder board is faced in blackened leather or imitation leather, through which protrudes a 3 7/8" x 3/4" silver-colored alloy tab, hinged at one end, and with a cut-out to its free end. The cut-out mates with a smaller tab, in the same material, positioned to the underside of the buttoned end of the board. Light age and usage soling is evident to the reverse. The wool obverse is lightly nap worn and soiled, and its golden tress has dulled with age. Its button has also dulled with age, and one of its cherry blossoms has noticeable darkening across it, whereas the other is totally unmarred. Overall, a relatively clean and intact example.
