J006157 (IJN) ENGINEERING LIEUTENANT'S SHOULDER BOARD. An approximately 4 5/8" x 1 5/8" shoulder board, upon whose obverse, stiffened, black wool base is sewn a 5/8" wide band of golden tress, with a decorative button to one end, and three rank "pips" spaced equidistantly along the remainder of its length. The tress is bordered with violet-colored piping, signifying the wearer’s branch of service as Engineering. The "pips" are each in the form of silver-washed alloy, five-petaled cherry blossom, and they, in combination with the tress, denoted the rank of a Lieutenant. The convex brass button has embossed to it a fouled anchor, against which is superimposed a cherry blossom, all against a horizontally ribbed background bordered by a rope-like surround. The reverse of the shoulder board is faced in tan-colored imitation leather, near one end of which exits a 4 1/8" x 11/16" brown leather strap, which is fixed at its other end by a 2 1/2" x 5/16" metal tab protruding through it from the underside of the button. Light to moderate oxidization stains may be seen to the metal tab, and the leather strap has one small abrasion along one of its edges. To the obverse, the brass button has significantly dulled with age, although the golden tress and the silver cherry blossoms are still bright, and the tresses’ piping and wool base exhibit only the lightest of age soiling.
