J005960 AIKUCHI DAGGER. A small dirk or dagger without a guard but having a wooden grip and scabbard. With an overall length of 33cm, the dirk separates into a 22cm long, tapering, oval-shaped scabbard, made from two sections of wood, hollowed to their interiors to accommodate the blade and then glued together, and a 11cm grip to an 19cm blade. The slightly curved, single-edged blade is fitted with a brass "Habaki" (blade collar) to its ricasso, which exhibits the typical "cat scratches." Its "Mune" (back edge) is "Iori"-shaped (with a raised ridge along its length). Light surface scratching and spotting, as well as some light pitting, may be seen to either side of the blade. The oval-shaped grip, which is from the same piece of wood as the scabbard, has a "Mekugi" (wooden securing peg) which passes through both of its sides and the tang within, locking it into place. Nice clean example.
