J005957 (IJN) ENGINEERING ENSIGN'S SHOULDER BOARD. An approximately 5" x 1 7/8" shoulder board, upon whose obverse, stiffened, black wool base is sewn a 3/8" wide stripe of golden tress, with a decorative button to one end, and a rank "pip" near the other. The "pip" is in the form of an alloy, five-petaled cherry blossom, and it, in combination with the tress, denoted the rank of a Lieutenant. The narrowness of the tress further distinguished the Lieutenant’s branch of service as being Engineering. The convex brass button has embossed to it a fouled anchor, against which is superimposed a cherry blossom, all against a horizontally ribbed background bordered by a rope-like surround. The reverse of the shoulder board is faced in light olive drab-colored imitation leather, near one end of which exits a 4 1/2" x 11/16" brown leather strap, which is fixed at its other end by a 2 5/8" x 5/16" metal tab protruding through it from the underside of the button. Light oxidization stains may be seen to the metal tab, and the leather strap has what appear to be glue and paper remnants near one end, and usage soiling and darkening near the other. The imitation leather is lightly age soiled. To the obverse, the brass button is compressed along its top, but is still very bright. The golden tress has dulled to a copper color, and the cherry blossom has an overall dull brown patina to it, with only hints of what may have been a gilt wash visible to its recesses. The wool base is typically, lightly nap worn and age soiled.
