J005457 (IJN) ENSIGN'S COLLAR TAB. An approximately 1 1/2" x 13/16" collar tab, upon whose black wool base is sewn a horizontal band of 1/4" wide, gold-colored tress, pinned near one end of which is an alloy, five-petaled cherry blossom. The combination of the cherry blossom and the tress signified that the wearer was an Ensign. The edges of the wool tab are wrapped and glued around a metal stiffener, visible to the reverse, through an opening in which the dual attachment prongs of the cherry blossom exit. Glue remnants cover most of the reverse. The wool is moderately nap worn, and the tress has dulled with age. Traces of what appears to have been a silver wash may be seen to the cherry blossom.
