J005359 (IJA) EM/NCO'S WINTER SERVICE PANTS. Olive drab wool construction breeches featuring a four brown bakelite button French fly front, with a metal hook and eye closure at the waist. There are two vertical slash side seam pockets, a 2 3/4" "V" slash to the rear waist, and three canvas belt loops, with an approximately 33" long cotton strap proceeding from each hip. The slightly flared thighs recede below the knees of each leg where an opening along the outside seams rising 5 1/2" from the cuffs is adjusted by means of two cotton straps. The interior waist band, crotch and pocket bags are all in white cotton. Inkstamped to the left interior pocket bag are the kanji characters for (from top to bottom) "9," "8" and "model" within a cartouche. Beneath this are two boxes, the left having four vertical columns, all left blank, the right having three vertical columns, each with kanji characters. The central column of the right box has six characters to it: the top two indicating the "Showa" era, followed by the characters for "10" and "7," then the character for "year," with the bottom character being indistinguishable; this would indicate that the breeches were manufactured in the seventeenth year of Showa, or 1942. Beneath the boxes is a smaller rectangle with faint kanji to it, alongside of which is a circle with darker kanji to it that must the manufacturer’s seal. Roughly a 30" waist. Typical nap wear, light age soiling, and some equally light fraying along the top of the waistband, the interior edge of the fly, and the leg cuffs, comprise its only distracting features. There are no holes, tears or repairs, and not even a single moth nip is visible. Very nice pair.
