J004958 (IJA) COMPANY GRADE OFFICERS’ DRESS SASH. A belt sash for a company grade officer (field officers’ sashes were similar, but had gold rather than red balls and tassels), 2 3/16" wide and approximately 40" long, approximately 54" in overall length with its balls and tassels included. The ribbed, thickly-woven silk sash has four red stripes separated by three white stripes running along its length. Near either of its ends are golden-colored alloy, sliding length adjustment buckles, through each of which part of the sash folded and fed, and which are attached to one another by the channel along the edge of one buckle mating with the rod to the edge of the other. The buckles are covered by a vertical section of sash material wrapped around them. This arrangement allowing the sash to worn as a belt with the tassels to either side of the connected buckles then falling to either side of the suspension mount for the sword. The balls and tassels themselves are red-colored, finer threads being interwoven around the stiffened balls, and thicker ones comprising the tassels. The sash is lightly soiled throughout, with light wear visible near one of its ends, and it has a section of moderate soiling roughly where it would be worn over the right hip.
