J004758 CIVIL DEFENSE OFFICER'S FIELD CAP. A wool construction, olive drab field cap, whose quality construction points to its being for an officer. Its thick, short visor is made of the same material as the body. Sewn over the forward seam line of the body of the cap is the 1" diameter brown base to a yellow wool civil defense insignia. The doubled, pigskin or imitation leather chin strap is fixed over each ear by metal disks, painted the same olive drab color as the strap, and is adjusted by two imitation leather sliding buckles along its length. It is noticeably soiled. The cap has three ventilation holes to either side of its body, near the crown. Three olive drab painted grommets are on either side of a 1 3/4" opening rising from the base of the reverse seam line - the six bound together by an adjustable, olive drab silk tie tape. A brown pigskin or imitation leather sweatband may be seen to its interior, upon which, within a horizontal rectangle, is stamped "A.B.K. Excellent" and "Quality." The interior is fully lined in olive drab silk. The silk appears to be only lightly age soiled, which may imply that this was unissued, however, its sweatband and chin strap have both stiffened with age and are lightly cracked, and the wool exterior is moderately moth worn, particularly along the base of the visor, and to the reverse of the cap.
