J004058 CIVIL DEFENSE OFFICER'S SERVICE TUNIC, BELT & BELT BUCKLE. An olive drab, thickly woven cotton tunic, with its original belt and belt buckle, and two separate collar tabs. The unlined tunic features four exterior pockets, a five button, single-breasted front closure, and a lay-down collar, faced with black silk. Dual hooks are to one side of the collar, and corresponding eyes are to its other side. The pleated patch pockets to each breast have scalloped, button-down flaps, with buttons, and the unbuttoned, angled slash hip pockets have straight-edged flaps. Belt loops are to each hip. The larger buttons to the front closure, and the smaller ones to the breast pockets, appear to be of brass, and each feature the civil defense emblem embossed to their convex obverses. Above each cuff are sewn two horizontal lengths of olive drab tress, the upper being 5/8" wide, the lower 1/4" wide. A 1 3/4" x 2 3/8" white cotton tag is sewn to the interior right breast, but is unmarked. A white cotton loop is to the interior neck, beneath which is a red on white maker’s tag sewn to a silk yoke. Both the tag and the yoke are moderately frayed. Five collar studs may be seen along the inside of the collar. The upper edge of the collar is moderately worn, and the stitched outlines of where collar tabs had been applied may be seen to the leading edges of its exterior. The tunic itself exhibits light age and usage soiling throughout, and has a subtle white mark above its right breast pocket. Roughly a size 36. Fed through its belt loops is a 1 5/8" wide, approximately 31" long, black silk or rayon belt. One of its ends is wrapped and sewn around a rectangular metal sliding length adjustment buckle, which the belt doubles back on itself and is fed through. Through the formed loop to that end is fed the rectangular metal base of the second part of a two-part buckle, from which extends its 1 1/8" diameter center, upon which is embossed the civil defense emblem. The other end of the belt is wrapped and sewn around the rectangular metal base of the first part of the buckle, from which extends its 1 11/16" outside diameter ring, decorated with embossed laurel leaves, which the second part would fit into. The fabric elements of the belt are moderately soiled, and its metal elements are heavily surface spotted. Also included are two collar tabs, each in the form of black wool parallelograms, 15/16" tall and approximately 1 1/32" wide. Near the base of each of their obverses is sewn a horizontal band of 1/8" wide silver tress, above which are fixed alloy devices in the form of the civil defense emblem, originally washed in silver. Their reverses are backed in black paper. Moderate nap wear is evident to their wool, their silver tress has darkened with age, and little of the silver wash to their devices remain.
