J003858 (IJA) LEADING PRIVATE'S "TYPE 98" WINTER SERVICE TUNIC. A fully lined tunic constructed from a heavy, olive drab colored wool, which features four exterior pockets, a five button, single-breasted front closure, and a lay-down collar with a hook and eye closure at the neck. The horizontal slash breast pockets have scalloped, button-down flaps, with buttons, and the unbuttoned, angled slash hip pockets have straight-edged flaps. A bayonet support strap, with a buttonhole and button, is to the left hip. The buttons to the front closure, and to the bayonet support strap, are all of olive drab painted metal, although the lowermost button, and that to the support strap, have lost their paint and are moderately surface spotted. The smaller buttons to the pockets are of gold colored alloy. All appear to have their original stitching. Sewn to either side of the collar are 1 3/8" x 3/4", red wool tabs, each with a yellow stripe running along their centers. These indicated the rank of Leading Private. The tabs are only lightly age soiled. Vertical tail skirt vents rise 6 3/4" from the base of the tunic beyond each hip pocket. The interior of the tunic is lined in white cotton, with a white cotton vertical slash pocket to the interior left breast, and a white cotton horizontal slash wound dressing pocket beneath that. The vertical slash pocket is ink stamped with two vertical rectangles, the left divided into four columns, all left blank, and the right with three columns, each with kanji characters within them. To the center column of the right rectangle is a "Showa era 16th year" (1941) date, and its right column has a size "large" indication. Above the right rectangle is a cartouche with kanji characters for "98 Type" within it, and beneath are encircled characters which likely indicate the maker. A loop, of the same material as the lining, is beneath the interior neck. Light to moderate age soiling is evident to the interior, and its exterior is typically, lightly nap worn. Roughly a size 38.
