J003758 (IJA) EM/NCO'S "TYPE 98" WINTER SERVICE TUNIC. A fully lined tunic constructed from a heavy, mustard colored wool, which features four exterior pockets, a five button, single-breasted front closure, and a lay-down collar with a hook and eye closure at the neck. The horizontal slash breast pockets have scalloped, button-down flaps, with buttons, and the unbuttoned, angled slash hip pockets have straight-edged flaps. A bayonet support strap, with a buttonhole and button, is to the left hip. The five large buttons to the front closure, and the smaller ones to the pockets and the bayonet support strap, are all of brown-colored metal, and all appear to have their original stitching. Vertical tail skirt vents rise 6 3/4" from the base of the tunic beyond each hip pocket. The interior of the tunic is lined in white cotton, with a white cotton vertical slash pocket to the interior left breast, and a white cotton horizontal slash wound dressing pocket beneath that. The vertical slash pocket is ink stamped with two vertical rectangles, the left divided into four columns, all left blank, and the right with three columns, each with kanji characters within them. To the center column of the right rectangle is a "Showa era 19th year" (1944) date, and its right column has a size "large" indication. Above the right rectangle is a cartouche with kanji characters for "98 Type" within it, and beneath are encircled characters which likely indicate the maker. A loop, of the same material as the lining, is beneath the interior neck. Only light age soiling is evident to the interior, which may indicate that it was never issued, although its exterior has moderate nap wear and moth nips to it, particularly to its reverse, and there is a noticeable tear to its lower left sleeve. Roughly a size 38.
