J003659 (IJN) POTTERY GRENADE.

BACKGROUND: Reportedly designed and used by the Imperial Japanese Navy, non-rusting and waterproof, according to the U.S. Manual on "Japanese Explosive Ordnance." Recent discoveries of stocks at the Sasbo Naval base would tend to support this. The grenade would also have been developed to help cope with the acute metal shortages in Japan at the time. It is also documented that the Japanese army used supplies of the same grenade.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Circular clay pottery grenade with a partially glazed finish. The top of the grenade has a protruding lip with a hole for the fuze; just the body remains, having been de-activated. The grenade has a 10 1/4" circumference at it's widest point and is roughly 3 1/4" tall. It is largely white in coloration, with a pinkish hue, mostly to it’s upper hemisphere, traces of glaze to the body, and pronounced glazing to the edges of the lip. A sizable chip is evident on the edge of the lip, otherwise no damage. the chip in the lip is typical of the demilling process. The GIs stuck a knife under the lip to pry off the fuze assembly...many have thischip, depending on how carefully the individual chose to do it. Nice example.
