J003158 (IJN) SPECIAL NAVAL LANDING FORCES RUCKSACK. An olive drab canvas rucksack, 19" wide when laid flat, and 22" tall. A roughly 8" square fold-over flap, also in olive drab canvas and whose forward corners are rounded, is sewn along the rear edge of the rucksack’s open top. To the leading edge of the flap is sewn a short loop, which a 6 /12" long canvas tape sewn to the front center of the sack itself would thread through. Beneath this tape is an 8 1/4" x 9" "saddlebag" pocket, to the leading edge of whose flap is another loop, mating with a 5 1/2" long tape sewn to the pocket’s front. To the base of the rucksack is a darker green panel, to either side of which are sewn the bases of 2" wide shoulder straps, whose other ends are sewn beneath a pentagonal panel to the upper part of the reverse of the sack. Ten reinforced eyes are sewn equidistantly along the edge of the open top of the rucksack, through each of which is threaded an adjusting tape. To the interior of the fold-over flap is ink stamped a vertical rectangle, within which are nine vertical divisions, with kanji characters to all but two of them. None of the characters are readily discernible. What appears to be the number "14" is handwritten to the interior of this flap as well. The rucksack has light age and usage wear, with a noticeable stain to the left of the pocket, and a small hole near the base of its reverse.
