J002558 (IJA) AIRCRAFT LIQUID COMPASS. A cast, blackened alloy housing to a liquid-filled compass, 5 3/4" in overall height, to whose forward face is a 3 15/16" diameter collar to the 2 1/4" diameter, convex window unto the compass dial. A vertical, no doubt originally luminous, indicator line is to the center of the dial, behind which floats a horizontal band, with "N," "E," "S," and "W" markings, as well as numbers from "2" to "34" ("0"/"36" being the "N" mark), also no doubt originally luminous, along it. A 1 3/4" wide, blackened alloy, horizontal cylinder, open at one end, is immediately beneath the window. The main body of the compass is roughly spherical, with the collar to a raised screw along its upper back, beneath which is a yellow paint mark, and which narrows, and then widens, towards its 4 5/16" diameter base. Along the lower right edge of the base is doubly screwed a 15/16" x 7/16" brass plate, upon which are embossed three rows of kanji characters, the second including a "3590" serial number, the third being a "Showa era 13th Year 5th Month" (May, 1938) date. The underside of the base has a 3 1/8" diameter opening to it, where a blackened alloy plate with concentric circles to it may be seen, and around which are six, equidistant, hollow posts, between which are two, slightly longer, threaded posts, and the space for a third. The housing has moderate wear to its paint, particularly along the edges of its base and window collar, and to its circular body, but it appears to function perfectly.
