J002556 (IJA) HAVERSACK. Introduced in 1938, the approximately 12" x 12" x 3", khaki-colored canvas knapsack features a top fold-over flap and a harness arrangement to the reverse comprised of two shoulder straps proceeding from each side of the upper back, and two narrower straps proceeding from each side of the lower back. To the ends of each of the shoulder straps, both of which have reinforced stitching, are sewn tabs with two brown-painted metal rings to them. The narrower straps to the base also have reinforced stitching to them, and even narrower straps sewn to their ends which pass through and adjust on the shoulder strap rings. Two long, narrow straps may be seen alongside each of the shoulder straps. A narrow strap is sewn to the center of the upper back, between the shoulder straps and their companion straps. A narrow strap is also sewn to the center of the lower back, between the reinforced straps there. The central, narrow strap to the top passes over the fold-over flap and down the front through a horizontal loop sewn to the pack’s upper body. The central, narrow strap to the bottom passes under the base and up the front through a horizontal loop sewn to the pack’s lower body. The two straps would then be tied together at the forward center of the bag. Between the two aforementioned horizontal loops and to either side of the body are two vertical loops through which pass the ends of a narrow, horizontal strap sewn at its center. Two sets of two narrow straps are positioned equidistantly along each side of the pack. To the underside of the top fold-over flap are two tie tapes which bind with matching tie tapes to the upper body of the pack. Between the flap’s tie tapes are several inkstamped kanji markings. Short flaps extending upwards from either side each have a tie tape to them. A pocket is sewn along the back to the interior, which closes with a tie tape to its upper edge and another sewn above it to the back of the pack itself. Typical age and usage soiling, color fading, and some spotting to some of the straps is evident. One of the horizontal cross straps is missing and you can the stitch lines from where it was removed. Nice combat vet, would display very well.
