J002058 (IJA) MOUNTED PERSONNEL'S’ SADDLEBAGS. A pair of thick, brown leather saddlebags, each of whose triple-ply reverses extend to form a connecting, "U" shape. An elongated oval perforation is to the center of this connection, to one side of which is a short leather tab, and to the other side is the leather base for a single-pronged metal buckle. The saddlebags themselves are each approximately 12" tall and 3 1/2" deep, with 7" wide openings to their tops, tapering to 4 1/2" wide, rounded bottoms. Both have flaps which cover almost half of their height, to whose leading edges are sewn 6 5/8" long straps with three buckling holes to them. These mate with the single-pronged metal buckles, with leather retaining loops, sewn to the front of each bag. Two vertical loops are sewn immediately beneath their top openings, through which pass horizontal straps, one proceeding from the left edge of the reverse and having five buckling holes to it, the other from the right edge and having a single-pronged metal buckle with a leather retaining loop to it. A rectangular metal "ring" is sewn alongside the base of the left horizontal strap to the right bag, and alongside the base of the right horizontal strap to the left bag. To each of their reverses are two, 3" tall, vertical leather loops, above which are riveted 5 1/4" x 1 3/4" brass plates with dual, vertical perforations to their centers. Identical plates may be seen in analogous positions to their interiors. To the interior of the right saddlebag’s flap is sewn a horizontal strap, divided into two loops by a stitch line to its center, with small, single-pronged metal buckles with leather retaining loops to the center of each of these loops. These mate with narrow leather straps, each with three buckling holes, sewn vertically above the horizontal strap. Moderate verdigris maybe seen to the brass plates, interior and exterior, and all of the metal buckles have dulled and darkened with age. The leather exhibits the expected chafe wear, surface scratching and wrinkling, but is very supple, evidently having been treated.
