J001956 (IJA) FIVE PIECE WOOL UNIFORM GROUP. Nice complete Japanese EM’s uniform grouping. Group includes visor cap, tunic, breaches, belt and boots.

-(1) IJA EM/NCO'S VISOR CAP. First introduced in 1905 and used until the end of the Second World War, the visor cap has an olive drab wool/felt crown and body, with a red wool center band and imitation black leather visor. The four-piece body top. Two metal grommet ventilation holes are under each side of the crown. The red wool center band has its vertical seam to its reverse, and to its front is pinned a five-pointed, IJA brass star. The cap has its original black patent finished chinstrap, with dual adjustment sliders, fixed over each ear by gilt-washed alloy buttons with embossed cherry blossoms to them. To the interior, its black oilcloth sweatband is complete and in very good condition. Nice complete blue silk liner with the original owners name hand written in on a small cloth tag. Cap shows the expected age, a few very tiny moth nips but is in overall excellent condition.

-(2) IJA EM/NCO'S WINTER TUNIC. A fully lined tunic constructed from a heavy, mustard-colored wool, which features four exterior pockets, a five button, single-breasted front closure, and a lay-down collar with a hook-and-eye closure at the neck. The horizontal slash breast pockets have scalloped, button-down flaps, with buttons, and the unbuttoned, angled slash hip pockets have straight-edged flaps. The five large buttons to the front closure are a brown-colored bakelite, and the smaller ones to the pockets are of the same material. Two of the front button have their original stitching, while the other three have been re-stitched. The top button had been replaced by an original metal type. Tunic comes complete with collar tabs for a Second Class Private. There is a IJN veterans association metal badge pinned above the right pocket that should probably be removed. The interior of the tunic is lined in white cotton, with a white cotton vertical slash pocket bag to the interior left breast, and a white cotton horizontal slash wound dressing pocket beneath that. The vertical slash pocket is very well marked with issue and depot stamps. Light age soiling and nap is evident, however, the tunic is still in excellent condition. Roughly a size 32 chest.

-(3) IJA M98 WOOL COMBAT BREECHES. Olive drab wool construction breeches featuring a five brown bakelite button French fly front. Stitching to the buttons is original except for the top one which is replaced. There are two vertical slash side seam pockets, a 2 3/4" "V" slash to the rear waist, and three canvas belt loops. The waist type strap has been cut off. The interior waist band, crotch and pocket bags are all in white cotton. Interior is very well marked with issue and depot stamps. Roughly a 34" waist. Typical nap wear and light age soiling that you would expect to see on a pair of period used pants.

-(4) IJA/IJN EM/NCO'S BELT & BUCKLE. A 1 3/4" x 49" brown leather belt with a single claw blackened metal buckle and five size adjustment holes. This is probably the nicest example condition wise that I have seen.. Getting hard to find, superb condition.

-(5) IJA RIDING BOOTS. A pair of rust-brown-colored boots, each approximately 18" in overall height, as used by NCO’s and EM’s. Their uppers are construction from three large pieces of pigskin, and their heels and soles are of stacked leather. A stacked leather wedge is above each of their heels, to keep spurs in place, when worn. Bottom of the boots are very well marked. Punch-holed to the outside top of each boot is "11.0." Both pull-tabs to the interior of each boot are intact and undamaged. The boots show heavy period use, and the left boot has heavy dry-rot and tears to the top. Would still display fine.
