J001856 (IJA) FIVE PIECE WINTER UNIFORM GROUP. Nice Japanese winter uniform group that consists of fur cap, winter parka, winter service tunic, winter "over" pants and leather belt.

(1)-Winter Cap. A standard pattern cap as issued to Japanese troops for cold weather conditions. Its exterior crown is comprised of six triangular sections of olive drab wool which meet at a wool-covered "button" to its top. Small, "D"-shaped flaps of the same material are sewn along the seam to the base of the sections above each ear. Beneath these extend olive drab wool panels which cover the ears, are joined by another panel along the back of the neck, and could be fastened under the chin to the front. A circular hole for each ear is cut into each of these panels, which could be covered by the small flaps. Each of the small flaps have rabbit fur lining their interiors and have olive drab loops to their outside edges. These loops mate with either the buttons sewn to each side of the crown, or the buttons sewn below each of the circular openings to the lower panels. A button is also sewn forward of each of the ear openings. A single button is sewn to the center of the reverse neck panel. To the extended base of the forward right panel are two buttons which mate with olive drab loops to the base edge and the inside of the left panel, either under the chin, or over the apex of the crown. When buttoned in the latter, upright position, the rabbit fur lining to the panels is exposed. A small section of the fur lining is permanently sewn to the front of the cap, above which is sewn a yellow felt five-pointed IJA star upon a circular, olive drab wool base. The interior crown is lined in dual-ply, white cotton and is well marked with issue stampings. Overall condition of the cap is very good.

(2)-Winter Parka. A full-length, double-breasted, khaki-colored waterproofed cotton extreme cold weather coat with removable sleeves. Four large bakelite buttons are vertically arranged to either side of its front closure. Corresponding buttonholes are along the forward edges of each panel, and a diagonally-angled buttonhole may be seen to each of their base edges. A hook and eye closure is to the neck, with a bakelite button and buttonholed flap to either side of it. To the left forward underside of the lay down collar is a dual buttonholed hexagonal tab which, with its rearmost bakelite button unbuttoned and with the collar upturned, would be free to swivel forward and mate with a corresponding bakelite button to the right forward underside of the collar. Short loops, in the same material as the coat, are sewn to each shoulder. Diagonally angled slash pockets are to each hip, each with a 7 3/4" vertical slash immediately behind them which allows access to the interior. A vent extends 14 1/2" upwards from the base of the reverse, whose French fly closure is fastened by two small bakelite buttons. Each buttonholed sleeve of the coat is attached near the shoulder by seven small bakelite buttons otherwise hidden under a short flap. Both sleeves are lined with rabbit fur, which is exposed by the up-turning of the cuffs. The inside of the collar is also lined with rabbit fur, and the bottom third of the coat interior is lined with wool. The remainder of the interior has a quilted lining. Liner is well marked with issue stamping. Light age and usage soiling is evident throughout. All of the fur looks to be in good condition. Approximate size 42" chest.

(3)-Winter Tunic. A light olive drab cotton twill tunic, with a heavy lining, for cold-weather conditions. The tunic features four exterior pockets, a five-button single-breasted front closure, open neck lapels, and a lay-down collar with a hook-and-eye closure to the neck. The horizontal slash breast pockets have scalloped button-down flaps, with buttons, and the unbuttoned, angled slash hip pockets have straight-edged flaps. A bayonet support strap, with a buttonhole and button, is to the left hip. The large buttons to the front closure, and the smaller ones to the breast pockets and support strap, are all of brown bakelite. To either side of the collar are sewn the 1 3/4" x 7/8" olive drab wool bases to Sergeants collar tabs. Vertical tail skirt vents are to each hip. The interior is lined in a tightly woven khaki cotton, with a white cotton vertical slash pocket bag to the interior left breast, and a white cotton horizontal slash wound dressing pocket beneath that. Interior is well marked with original issue stampings. Condition is near perfect. Approximate size 34" chest.

(4)-Winter "Over" Pants. Meant to be worn over top of the regular trousers for added cold weather protection. Typical olive drab material, with taped cloth belt. Three large bakelite button front fly closure. Slash access pocket to get into the regular pants. The interior front legs are lined in white rabbit fur. Taped cloth tie-straps to each leg end. Nice issue marking. Superb condition. Waist is app 36"

(5)-Leather Belt. A 1 3/4" x 38" brown leather belt with a single claw metal buckle and nine size adjustment holes. Usage wear has resulted in chafing along the edges and buckling holes. The leather is still quite supple.

Overall very nice grouping
