J001756 (IJA) CASED MARKSMANSHIP COMPETITION BADGE. A 1 15/16" x 2 7/16" x 1/2", unmarked beige cardboard case, along whose edges are glued white paper, and within which is a marksmanship badge. Upon opening the case, two small pieces of paper cover the badge within, one blank, the other with three columns of kanji characters printed to it, in red. The center column of the latter paper, comprised of three characters, translates to, from top to bottom, "good," "badge" and "include[d]" or "container." Beneath these, the award itself rests against cotton wadding. The alloy badge takes the form of a convex, five-petaled cherry blossom, 1 7/16" from the end of one petal to another, with crossed rifles upon it. The rifles and the petals are in silver, while the borders of the petals, and the lines radiating out from their center, are in gold. A silver cherry blossom with gilt borders usually indicates the second class award, however, that may be different as it would appear that this is the 1887 model award, differentiated from the 1939 model by its petals not being pebbled and its rifles being a different form. A hinge with a broad, flat pin, whose perforated end mates with an "eye," is to its otherwise featureless reverse. The badge exhibits moderate wear to the highlights of its silver elements, and its case is lightly age soiled, but intact.
