J001658 JAPANESE PATRIOTIC "OFF TO
WAR" BANNER. Send-off
parades were organized for soldiers on their way to the local railway station by
community organizations, with the participants carrying banners
("nobori"), suspended from vertical poles, each with the name of a
specific recruit to them. This example is an approximately 12 3/4" x
56", patterned, white silk banner, to the top of which, against a purple
background with white zig-zags, has been printed a red cherry blossom above two
crossed flags, the war flag to the left and the national flag to the right, with
light green tassels joining them. Beneath that, in black, are handwritten the
kanji characters for "congratulations" or "celebrate,"
followed by those for "departure for the front." Beneath these are
large black characters which undoubtedly include the name of the recruit, with
the last character being that for "mister." A column of four smaller
characters, which may include the donor’s name (often the subject’s
employer), is handwritten to the left of the larger ones. A pattern of
horizontal purple lines run along either edge of the banner. Its bottom edge is
pointed, and has yellow fringe along it. Its top is folded over and sewn to
create a tunnel loop, through which a horizontal wooden bar is passed. Tied
around either end of the paper wrapped ends of the bar is a twisted yellow and
white suspension cord with yellow and white tassels to each of its ends. The
banner is very lightly age soiled and wrinkled throughout.
