J001463 (IJN) TYPE 90 COMBAT HELMET WITH 1st PATTERN COVER. The standard WWII Japanese Naval Landing Force combat helmet with 1st pattern cover. The shell, constructed from chrome molybend steel, most likely retains most of its original matt finish olive drab paint. Note, we did not remove the cover as we did not want to damage the remaining areas holding it together. However, its still possible to the finish and insignia by carefully lifting up the fabric near the edge worn areas. The IJN metal fouled anchor and cherry blossom affixed to the front is painted the same as the shell. The three pad pigskin liner and band is complete to the interior, with no cracking or tearing. The liner pads each have their original cloth padding bags. Kanji characters, no doubt the original owner’s name, have been hand-written to the forward liner pad. A standard, 1st pattern, padded cover for the type 90 helmet has been fitted to it. Its khaki-colored, water-resistant cloth exterior is comprised of six machine sewn pieces, meeting at the apex of the crown and gathered along their tunnel-looped base by an adjustable tie string. An olive drab wool vertical oval is machine sewn to the front of the cover, upon which is sewn a yellow anchor. The wool exhibits moderate nap wear. The original owner informed me that he picked up the helmet directly from the U.S. vet who brought it back. Everything is untouched with the exception of the cloth chinstrap which was re-added by the collector as it was missing when he obtained it (the back-strap was still present). Nice, salty, combat worn and used example!
