J001457 (IJA) FRONT AMMO POUCH. Standard issue, model 30 (1897) front ammunition pouch as used by the Japanese army throughout the war. The 6" x 3 3/4" x 2 3/8", narrowing to 1 3/8" at the base, dual pocket, with the interior separated into two compartments each with its original dividers. Later war, rubberized canvas construction pouch originally would have held two groups of three five-round clips of 7.7mm ammunition, for a total of thirty rounds. The riveted hinge top flap opens outward and is secured by a horizontal closure strap, with a stud hole to each of its ends, passing through a stitched-on loop to the flap top, and mating with brass studs on either side of the pouch. There are two riveted-on vertical belt loops to the reverse of the pouch. The rubberized canvas has stiffened with age which is very common for these, but is in overall excellent condition.
