J001456 (IJA) CASED ARTILLERY CREW'S PROTECTIVE EAR PLUGS. A 2 3/16" x 7/8" x 1 3/16" wooden case, whose separate cover swivels from its central, alloy screw and washer, exposing dual depressions for a pair of earplugs. Semi-circular cuts are along either side of the cover, aligning, when turned at a right angle, with the depressions in the body of the case, and one end of the cover is deeper, and that end of the case cut correspondingly shallower. Three kanji characters are stamped along one side of the case, the middle of which is that for "ear," and the rightmost that for "protection." To the other side of the case is stamped the kanji character indicating a size "large." The hollow, black bakelite earplugs within are each 11/16" tall, and are shaped not unlike pawns from a game of chess. A small opening is to each of their tops, and each of their 1/2" diameter bases have screen-covered, 1/4" diameter openings to them. Both of the earplugs exhibit light age and usage wear. Their wooden case is equally lightly soiled.
