J001358 JAPANESE PATRIOTIC "OFF TO
WAR" BANNER. Send-off
parades were organized for soldiers on their way to the local railway station by
community organizations, with the participants carrying banners
("nobori"), suspended from vertical poles, each with the name of a
specific recruit to them. This example is an approximately 19" x 65"
white silk banner, to the top of which has been printed a golden cherry blossom
encircled by a wreath of green laurels, beneath which are two crossed flags, the
war flag to the right and the national flag to the left, against a green
background and with lighter green tassels joining them. The green background is
broken at its base by a red zig-zag, bordered top and bottom with white ones.
Beneath that, in red, are the kanji characters for "congratulations"
or "celebrate," after which is a handwritten column of five, large
black characters, which undoubtedly include the name of the recruit, with the
last character being that for "mister." A column of six smaller
characters, which may include the donor’s name (often the subject’s
employer), is handwritten to the left of the larger ones. The rounded, bottom
edge of the banner has orange fringe along it, and either side of the banner is
bordered in patterned, green silk. Its top is folded over and sewn to create a
tunnel loop, through which a horizontal wooden bar is passed. At the top of the
tunnel loop is printed an oval with kanji characters within it, alongside of
which is a square ink stamp, again with characters. Tied around either end of
the exposed wooden bar is a twisted red suspension cord with orange tassels to
each of its ends. The banner is lightly age soiled and wrinkled throughout, with
some color fading and several small holes to the base of its edging.
