J001256 (IJN) 25MM ARTILLERY SHELL. A 9 1/8" tall, inclusively, shell and projectile. The 2 3/4" tall, hollow steel projectile is 1" (25mm) in diameter where it fits into the shell. Its exterior has copper bands to it where it is fitted, and its tapering, 1" tall, threaded brass head unscrews from the projectile, revealing a 1 7/8" deep cavity. To this screw-off head is impressed a couple of characters from the "Iroha" syllabary, as well as the western letters "A" and "GV." The screw along its side has been painted white. The 6 3/8" tall brass shell is stamped, to its 1 5/8" diameter base, with the western letter "S," with the western numerals "9" over "17" to the right of it. A couple of kanji characters may also be seen, and an anchor, establishing it as Navy issue. Another anchor is stamped alongside its primer, as well as another kanji character. The shell has the patina to it one expects from old brass, along with noticeable verdigris, and a hole has been drilled into its side near its base. Its steel projectile, with its copper bands, is similarly age darkened, as is its brass head.
