J001157 (IJA) TWO HORSE BITS & BRIDLES. Two thick, brown leather harnesses, each with iron fittings, one complete, the other partial. The complete harness has a iron bit (mouthpiece), with a curve to its center, attached to iron bars at either of its ends, with decorative brass plates doubly riveted over these connections, each of which has an encircled cherry blossom embossed to it. The brass has significantly darkened with age and usage. To one end of each of these bars is a ring, unto each of which is fed a doubly buckled strap. These 13/16" wide straps are split from a 1 11/16" wide strap, which would have passed around the back of the horse’s head. A 5/8" wide strap is also split from the wider strap, is adjustable by two buckles, and would have passed beneath the horse’s jaw. Fed unto the wider strap are floating loops formed from the ends of a 1" wide, vertical strap, which would have passed over the horse’s forehead. To the other ends of the iron bars are two smaller rings, the farthest of each of these having larger rings fed unto them. Fed unto these larger rings are either, folded over and buckled ends of a 3/4" wide rein, which has a floating, leather retainer and proceeds for 105" before the two straps are sewn unto a single one, 26" long, whose end is wrapped and sewn around a transverse, wooden toggle. The partial harness is comprised of elements already seen to the complete one, but that it is missing its rein, and its right iron bar. To both, all of the stitching to the leather is intact, and the leather elements themselves are still relatively supple. The expected chafe wear and age cracking may be seen, however, and their iron and metal components all exhibit light surface spotting.
