J001156 JAPANESE ORNAMENTAL SILK MAP. An approximately 28" square, silk "Fukusa," or gift wrapping, black but for its lower left quarter where it has printed to it a color map of Japan, Korea, Manchuria, and north-eastern Russia, Mongolia and China. Major rivers and rudimentary elevations are indicated, as are major centers and the rail lines connecting them. What appears to be the great wall of China may also be seen. Kanji characters evidently name some of these centers, as well as the seas between land masses. Against the ocean near the corner of the image is that of a Japanese helmet with a fringed, rising sun flag behind it. Several light stains may be seen to the map, and the silk has several small holes to it as well, most noticeably to its black field. All of its colors, however, are still bright.
