J001059 (IJA) TYPE 89 HIGH EXPLOSIVE "KNEE MORTAR" ROUND.

BACKGROUND: First adopted in 1929 (Japanese year 2589, hence, type "89") and used with the M89 50mm grenade discharger (commonly known as the "knee mortar") until the end of the war.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A high explosive round with a propellant charge to its 2" diameter base, it stands 5 3/4" tall, with its brass fuse cap comprising 1 1/4" of its overall height. This brass head, divided by a channel which runs along its widening mid-section, has a knob to its top which depresses when the dual-pronged pin to its side, whose short pull-cord is still attached, is pulled out. The round could, if necessary, be used as a hand grenade with the pin pulled and thrown. To the sloping shoulders where the brass fuse meets the cast iron body is painted a 1/4" wide red band. The body is painted in black enamel with a 1/4" yellow band painted horizontally along its center. There also looks to be a 1/4" white stripe painted to its base. The body unscrews, with this lower section, with a copper band along its side, originally housing the propellant charge. To the base of this lower section are eight exhaust ports surrounding the central perforation for the percussion cap. The interior top of this lower section is concave and painted in black enamel. The interior of the body itself is hollow, where a brass collar descending from the fuse may be seen. Deactivated.
