J001057 (IJA) HORSE BIT & BRIDLE. A thick, brown leather harness, with iron and brass fittings. Its jointed, iron bit (mouthpiece), in two interlocking parts, is attached to iron rings at either of its ends, each of these alongside an identical ring with a twisted piece of iron fed unto it, with both pairs of rings fed through the ends of dual, doubly buckled straps. These four, 13/16" wide straps are split from a 1 11/16" wide strap, which would have passed around the back of the horse’s head. Over where each pair of these straps split are decorative brass ovals, both in the form of a 1 7/8" wide wreath of laurels or bamboo, with a bow to its base, enclosing a cherry blossom. Rising from behind these ovals is a 3/4" wide strap which would have passed over the horse’s forehead. Another, longer strap, 5/8" wide, is fed through loops to the either interior base of the latter strap, and has a buckle and buckling holes to its ends. This strap would also have passed around the back of the horse’s head, and then beneath its jaw. All of the stitching to the leather is intact, and the leather elements themselves are still relatively supple. The expected chafe wear and age cracking may be seen, however, and there is one split along a buckling hole to the strap which passes under the horse’s jaw. Its iron components are all exhibit light surface spotting. The brass ovals appear to have originally had a gilt wash, only traces of which remain.
