J000758 (IJA) CASED 2.5 X 10 POWER SNIPER'S SCOPE. A blackened metal, fixed focus scope within an olive drab colored, rubberized canvas carrying case. The case is approximately 9" in overall height, 1 3/4" deep, and 3 1/4" wide along its top, tapering to 2" at its base. Its lid, of the same material as the body, is connected by a canvas hinge to the reverse, which holds within its formed loop a triangular, olive drab painted metal hook. Descending from the front of the lid is a tan leather strap with a single prong hole, which mates with the olive drab painted, single pronged metal buckle rising from a similar strap, with a retaining loop, sewn to the front of the case’s body. Above the buckle, to the body, is stamped a series of partially discernible kanji characters. The interior of the lid is lined in dark colored velvet, wooden dividers are riveted within the body to hold the scope in place, and there is a vertical loop along its straight side which holds a 4 3/8" long, wood, celluloid and hair cleaning brush. Through a grommet above this vertical loop is fed a white cord with a white cleaning rag tied to its other end. The scope within is 7 7/8" in overall length, the optics being 6 7/8" long, with the mount beneath it extending from the leading edge of the scope. The assembly would have been longer, but most of its bakelite eyecup has shattered, its pieces included loosely at the bottom of the case. To the top of the scope, forward of the eyecup, is stamped, in white, "2.5 x 10" degrees (the magnification and the field of vision), the "Tomioka" manufacturer’s logo, in the form of an encircled, inverted triangle with an upright arrow within it, and "99" followed by "No. 2912." The "99" may refer to the model 99 (1939) 7.7mm rifle, which, along with the model 97 (1937) 6.5mm rifle, these scopes were used with. To the exterior face of the mounting is a swiveling toggle, with posts to either side of it to limit its turn, alongside each of which are stamped, in white, upward arching arrows pointing to kanji characters. To its interior face are rails, open at one end and stopped at the other, with a kanji character and a serial number stamped between them. To the depressions between the rails may be seen, marked in pencil, "S" within one, and "B" within the other. The scope would have been mounted on the left side of the receiver of the rifle. Within its eyepiece is a reticle pattern, in the form of a horizontal line with increments of five marked to either side of its center point, and increments of one descending vertically from that center point. The optics are very clear. The exterior finish of the scope exhibits the expected edge wear and surface scratching, but almost all of its original blackening has been retained. The case has light edge wear, and equally light age and usage soiling to it. Rare.
