J000660 (IJN) SEAMAN’S "DONALD DUCK" CAP WITH BOX. A black wool Imperial Japanese Navy seaman’s cap with a post-1941 cap tally. The cap’s 9" diameter crown has its original stiffening wire intact under its black piping. Its 1 3/8" tall body has seams to each of its cardinal points, and two alloy grommets over each ear. A vertical stiffening wire is under the forward seam. The 1 3/4" tall headband has a 1 1/4" black silk cap tally sewn to it, along the front of which is machine woven seven kanji characters, in gold. The horizontal cap tally divides at its reverse, with either side folding back upon themselves, where they are sewn diagonally and descend 1 3/4" into forked, vertical "tails." An anchor, machine woven in gold, is to each of these "tails." The interior of the cap is fully lined in black, brushed cotton, and features, to the center of its crown, a white oilcloth tag with five vertical lines of kanji characters to it. Sewn under the sweatband, over each ear, is a single-piece, non-adjustable, black elasticized chin strap. Cap comes complete with its original 10.5" diameter x 4" cardboard storage box.
