J000558 (IJA) OFFICER'S BACKPACK. A 9 1/4" x 11" x 3", dark brown leather army issue officer’s backpack, with dual shoulder straps to the reverse and whose top fold-over flap covers its entire front. The fold-over flap has the outline of a five-pointed star stitched to its base, beneath which is sewn a dual-buttonholed leather tab. The leather tab mates with a brass single-pronged buckle with a leather retaining loop sewn to the bottom of the backpack. To either side of this buckle are identical arrangements, angled outwardly, which accommodate the ends of the shoulder straps. The two shoulder straps proceed from the upper center of the reverse of the backpack, where they are each 1 3/4" wide, tapering along their 26" length to a 3/4" width, and featuring six buckling holes near their ends. The interior of the fold-over flap is comprised of a tan-colored cotton pocket upon which are sewn dual tie tapes which mate with the dual tie tapes sewn to a short flap, in the same material, above it. This same material lines the remainder of the interior. The forward body of the backpack is vertically divided into two sections, with a third, horizontal section rising 2 3/4" from the base. The left vertical panel has a small, shallow leather pocket sewn near its base, with two taller pockets behind it. The right vertical panel has an identical small pocket, but with three narrower, although equally as tall, pockets behind it. These would have undoubtedly been for pencils and the like. Each of the vertical panels have dual tie tapes to their edges, which tie together to form a closure. A tie tape is also to the base of each of these panels, which mate with the dual tie tapes to the horizontal section. Nice untouched officers pack.
