G13655 M1887 AMMO POUCH. (Kartusche für Karabinermunition)
BACKGROUND: Originally developed in 1887 for the 11mm M71, and M/69 cartridges these pouches were modified early in WWI by the addition of three internal spring steel clips designed to hold three 8.1mm M88 cartridge stripper clips with each clip containing five cartridges.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Smooth, blackened leather ammo pouch is roughly 5 1/4" wide, 3 3/4" tall and 1 1/2" wide. Pouch has a top fold over flap with stitched hinge to obverse and vertical closure straps stitched to each side. Closure straps attach to extended steel studs on each side of pouch body. Reverse of pouch has two stitched on, vertical belt loops with horizontal retaining loops. Belt loops each have a cut-out eyelet which attaches to steel studs positioned on the bottom of the pouch. Bottom of pouch also has four small rivets to secure the internal spring steel clips in place. Reverse also has a leather reinforced, stitched steel "D" ring to top center. Reverse is well marked with impressed manufacturers name, location and date, "Julius Jansen Strassburg 1916". Interior of pouch has three pair of spring steel clips with leather pockets to each set. Pouch is in overall good condition with light chafe wear.
