G12255 M1910 MESS KIT. (Kochgeschirr) The standard, two-piece, steel construction, kidney-shaped mess kit, 7 1/4" tall overall, 6 1/4" wide and 3 3/4" deep. The kit retains 90% of it original grey-green enamel coating, with most of the wear to the handle. Its cover, which has a stepped bottom and a raised lip around its edge, also has a metal handle, with both a horizontal and a vertical retaining loop near its free end, fed through a riveted loop to its forward face. The handle vertically descends the full height of the mess tin and then wraps under its base. With the cover off, this handle extends horizontally. Both the cover and main body are nicely marked "Silesia" and dated for 1917. The body of the mess kit itself has a metal wire handle attached to brazed to steel loops on either side. The wire handle has a deliberate bend to its center section, which would normally be positioned underneath the kit, but when swiveled above it, can suspend it for cooking over an open fire. Four indentations are to the front of the body for use as a measure. The interior is in excellent condition showing a few minor chips to the enamel which are to be expected. Nice example.
