G09753 S 98/05 aA COMBAT BAYONET.
(Seitengewehr) A first pattern model 1898/05 bayonet, without the flash guard along the back of its grips introduced in 1915, and with "ears" to the top of the cross guard like a truncated muzzle ring, known as the S 98/05 aA ("Seitengewehr 98/05 alte Art," or, Bayonet ‘98/’05 old Pattern). The bayonet has an overall length of 19 3/4". Its bright steel, contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide and locking stud, with two inspection marks, both in the form of what appears to be a crowned, Gothic letter "C," stamped above the reverse of the stud, and an identical mark is stamped forward of the stud guide. Both of its contoured wooden grips have nine diagonal grooves incised into them, and they are fixed by two plain-headed bolts and slot-headed washers. Visible through the rectangular cuts to the base of each grip is a circular cleaning hole. The grips have darkened with age and the obverse grip exhibits wear where it meets the pommel. The riveted steel cross guard has the aforementioned "ears" to its top, and a "quillon," which curves backwards and terminates in a ball tip, extends from its base. A crowned letter "C" is stamped to the lower surface of the cross guard, near where several nicks to the metal may be seen. All of the metal elements of the hilt have a patina of light surface spotting to them. The 14 1/2" bright blade, which is 1" wide near the guard, and widens to 1 3/8" before tapering to a point, has wide fullers along most of its length. A cypher comprised of a crown over a "W" (most likely for King Wilhelm II (1888-1918) of Prussia, or possibly King Wilhelm II of Württemburg (1891-1918)) with "15" (the acceptance date) beneath that, and another crowned "C" inspection mark beneath that, are stamped to the back of the blade near the ricasso. The maker’s name and location is stamped to the reverse ricasso, being "Weyersburg Kirschbaum & Cie. Soligen," who made these bayonets from 1907 until the beginning of 1915. The blade exhibits moderate surface spotting, and scabbard runner marks are visible near its point.GRADE ***3/4 PRICE $117.00
