G09555 IMPERIAL EM/NCO'S BELT. (Koppel)
BACKGROUND: Standard German Infantry belt from 1847 to 1918. The belt for the field uniform was originally of tanned leather, but blackened leather was re-introduced in 1915. Worn by enlisted personal from all states.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 36" x 1 3/4", blacken leather belt, one end of which is wrapped and sewn around an age darkened brass buckle hook, and its other end has a 8 1/8" x 1 1/4" retaining tongue riveted to its underside. The tongue has seven pairs of buckling holes along its length, which would mate with the dual prongs to the reverse of a box buckle. "100," the size marking (being its length in centimeters), is impressed to the exterior of the belt, to the end above the retaining tongue. The catch end looks to have a common period stitching repair. It exhibits moderate to heavy chafe wear and wrinkling, with a few deep scratches, but it is still remarkable supple. The really interesting thing about this example is that the tongue is riveted, which you don’t see too often, they are normally stitched. Unmarked, but definitely pre-1915. Decent example.
