G09453 M1871 MAUSER CARBINE.
(Karabiner) A shortened version, accepted in May of 1875 and destined for cavalry troops, of the longer M/71 rifle, with a new foresight and a bent bolt handle. The 39 3/8" long carbine has a butt like that of the rifle, but with a wider end plate, to distribute the stronger recoil. The end plate has a screw to its lower center, and another where it extends for a short distance over the top of the butt. Both screws have "221" stamped to them, and those same numbers may be seen stamped beneath the former screw, to the screws on either side of the rear sling loop, to the screw to the rear of the trigger plate, and that forward of the trigger plate, to one side of the barrel band, and to the underside of the forward sight. These stamps may also be seen to the screw to the rear of the bolt channel, to the back of the bolt, to the leaf of the safety, to the top of the bolt handle, to the top of the bolt itself, to the left of the receiver, to the left of the section forward of the receiver, to the top of the fixed sight, and to the reverse of the movable leaf for that sight. To the end plate is also stamped "21.D.1.108." What may be a "0," with a smaller "3" beneath it, is stamped near the top of the end plate. Before the screw to the extension to the top of the butt is a crowned "W," and this same inspection stamp is also after the screw to the trigger plate. "K. Mod. 71." ("Karabiner Modell 1871") is stamped to the left of the receiver, and "88.1879" (the latter numbers being the date of its manufacture) is stamped to its right. The screw to the top of the bolt-stop has "21" and a crowned "X" stamped to it, and what may be a crowned "W" is stamped to the washer-shaped bolt-stop beneath. A crowned "B," "C," and "X" are stamped to the right forward part of the receiver. To the right of the section forward of the receiver are stamped two crowned "B"s, followed by a crowned "C," "K," and "D." To the left of this section are stamped two smaller inspection marks, in the form of a crowned "D" and a crowned "B," as well as "FW." (for Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia) beneath a crown. "1095" is also stamped to this section. To its top is stamped "Spandau" beneath a crown, which was one of Prussia’s three leading state rifle factories (the others being Erfurt and Danzig). The fixed sight is ranged for 270 meters, and has a leaf which can be adjusted to 1200 meters. Stamped to the top of the sight base, which is an integral part of the barrel, are inspection stamps in the form of crowned "D" and a what may be a crowned "J," as well as the number "1." To the extension beneath the barrel band, for an absent forward sling loop, is stamped what may be a crowned "W." A similar stamp is to the underside of the forward sight. All of the carbine’s moving parts appear to function perfectly, with the exception of the safety, whose leaf is inflexible. The bluing to the metal components is, unsurprisingly, worn to its edges and highlights, but has minimal surface spotting. Wooden stock may be refinished? Its in excellent condition. This classified as an antique under Canadian firearms laws & does not require an FAC to own. This can only be shipped to a Canadian address.GRADE ***3/4 PRICE $1,115.00
